Events and Activity Days at Sun Rising

A number of events and activity days take place at the burial ground each year, designed to give families and the local community an opportunity to get involved. All are welcome to attend. Details are also posted on our noticeboard onsite.

Volunteer Days

There may be a few more opportunities this year for people to help out, both with weeding and planting up the butterfly bank and with creating the new wildflower meadow.  Let us know if you’re interested or watch out for news here or via the email mailing list. Wild Daffodils

Planting Days : Bulbs, Seeds and Perennials

This year the date of our Planting Day is Saturday 21 October, 11 am – 3 pm.  If you can’t make the Saturday, there will be a chance to come along on Sunday 22 October if you let us know you’re coming. We’ll have a range of native bulbs, a few perennials and our own wildflower seed packs especially created for sowing on graves (£2.50 per pack).  Please let us know if you’d like some of our bulbs by 6 October, so we can ensure we have enough.

If you prefer to source your own bulbs, plants or wildflower seed, please remember that you’ll need to follow our Acceptable Plants List.  Everything not wild and native will be removed, including all daffodils except the native Narcissus pseudonarcissus (photo right), and all bluebells that aren’t clearly bonafide English.  Let us know if you’d like a recommended source.  Don’t waste money and put in plants and bulbs that will just be removed.

Armistice Day

This year 11 November falls on a Saturday, and we hope this will encourage more to attend what is a quiet and gentle occasion.  We meet at 10.45 for 11 am.  It is just a short gathering.  With so many faiths and beliefs at Sun Rising, this is a non-religious event with a simple focus: to remember in peace all those who have died in conflicts, near and far, old and new, sharing the serenity of this place.  All are welcome.

Tree Planting

The planting of memorial trees takes place this year in late November to mid December as usual.  Our deadline for placing tree orders is 10 November, so if you’d like to have a tree planted do let us know.  We are happy to have memorial trees for those laid to rest here, as well as those buried or scattered elsewhere.

Mulled Wine and Carols

This year our carols event will be on Sunday 17 December, 11 am – 3 pm.  There’ll be mulled wine and mince pies, carols playing gently, and the chance to buy calendars, honey, hare pins and wreaths, all in aid of The Friends.  We hope you will join us to meet with friends, both old and new.  You’re welcome to pop in for ten minutes or stay for much longer.

Christmas Day

As usual, Sun Rising will be open on Monday 25 December.  In the morning, we’ll be on hand with coffee and mince pies, and support for those who may find the day particularly difficult.

Open Days

Our next Open Day will be in June 2018. At our Open Days, there is the opportunity to come and have a chat, meet Emma and David, have a tour around the burial ground and nature reserve, talk about your needs and wishes, and ask questions. Our aim is to give you all the information you need in order to find the inner peace that is so valuable when facing the end of our lives or the passing of a loved one. If you'd like to meet someone before then, just give us a call.
