Events and Activity Days at Sun Rising
A number of events and activity days take place at the burial ground each year, designed to give families and the local community an opportunity to get involved. All are welcome to attend. Details are also posted on our noticeboard onsite.
Dying Matters | Awareness Week - Thursday 11 May, 10.30 - 12.30, and Saturday 13 May 2017, 2 - 4 pm
This year’s theme for the Awareness Week is ‘What Can You Do?’, or how can we prepare, for our own death and dying and for that of family and friends. Check out the Dying Matters website for more information about the organisation. Here at Sun Rising, we intend to hold a couple of events that support the week; more details will be posted here.
Nature Watch Day - Saturday 20 May, 11 am - 3 pm
Amateur or expert, young or old, whether you are looking tolearn or to share what you know, all are welcome at our nature watch days. Our aim is to record all the flora and fauna onsite, and everyone can help!
Open Day - Saturday 17 June, 11 am - 3 pm
At our Open Days, there is the opportunity to come and have a chat, meet Emma and David, have a tour around the burial ground and nature reserve, talk about your needs and wishes, and ask questions. Our aim is to give you all the information you need in order to find the inner peace that is so valuable when facing the end of our lives or the passing of a loved one.
Roll of Remembrance - Saturday 17 June, 3 - 5 pm
At the Roll, the names of everyone buried or remembered here at Sun Rising is read aloud. This is a gentle, moving and respectful event, to which all are welcome. Refreshments will be available in aid of The Friends of Sun Rising.
Nature Watch Day - Sunday 16 July, 11 am - 3 pm
Another opportunity (see 20 May above).
There will be a number of opportunities through the summer for people to help out, creating the new wildflower meadow and raking up the hay in established wildflower areas. Let us know if you’re interested or watch out for news here or via the email mailing list.
Moth Night - Sunday 27 August, 8 pm onwards
With moth traps set up at dusk, this is an opportunity to see some of the 250 or so species of moth found at Sun Rising with our moth expert Alan Prior. The event starts at 8 pm and can go on until the early hours - you’re welcome to stay for just an hour or two, or as long as you wish. Let us know if you would like to come, then we can tell you if we need to cancel. Bring sturdy shoes, a torch and sunglasses!
The Friends of Sun Rising AGM - Saturday 9 September, 2 – 5 pm
At our annual gathering, subscribing Friends can hear about the work of the charity, share ideas for fundraising and events, be updated on plans and developments for the burial ground and nature reserve – and meet others for whom Sun Rising is a special place. We shall also have a speaker giving a talk on some related subject (details TBC). If you aren’t already a Friend, you can join on the door.
