Events and Activity Days at Sun Rising

A number of events and activity days take place at the burial ground each year, designed to give families and the local community an opportunity to get involved. All are welcome to attend. Details are also posted on our noticeboard onsite.

Planting Day

Saturday 13 October 2018, 11 am – 3 pm
This is an event where families can head to Sun Rising to buy bulbs, plants and seeds, for planting and sowing on and around graves. We’ll have plenty of bulbs: native wild daffodils, snowdrops, English bluebells, and snakeshead fritillaries.  These average at 50p a bulb – let us know by 30 September if you’d like us to some aside for you.  We’ll also have some perennials and our own wildflower seed packs.

Armistice Day

Sunday 11 November 2018, 2 - 4 pm
11 November 2018 not only falls on Remembrance Sunday but is also of course the centenary.  So as not to compete with events at war memorials in towns and villages around, we shall not be holding a gathering at the cairn this year.  Instead, we will be planting native daffodils, initially one for each of the men named on the Tysoe war memorial.  If you would like us to include a daffodil for a loved one who lost their life, or whose life has been affected by conflict, please let us know.  If you’d like to help with the planting on the afternoon of 11 November, do get in touch.  We'll be there between 2 and 4 pm.

At this event there will also be some more bulbs and perennials for families to buy and plant on and around loved ones' graves. Do let us know if you intend to come along and would lilke any bulbs or plants reserved for you.

Tree Planting

Planting of memorial trees takes place late November to mid-December.  Our deadline for placing tree orders is 5 November this year.  Get in touch if you have any queries.

Pre-Christmas at Sun Rising

Sunday 16 December 2018, 11 am – 3 pm
This is our key winter event, with mulled wine and mince pies, carols and Christmas music, and an assortment of possible gifts for friends and family: honey, our beautiful hare lapel pins, tea towels, cards and wreaths – as described below.  If you’d like to help out on the day, let us know.  Otherwise, simply come along.  All proceeds will go to the Friends of Sun Rising.

Christmas Day

Tuesday 25 December 2018
Sun Rising will be open as usual.  In the morning, there’ll be hot coffee and mince pies, and warm company for those who find the day especially hard.

Talk and Tapas: Spiders

Saturday 2 March 2019, 5.30 - 7.30 pm
The first of a series of nature talks in Tysoe Village Hall, this will be led by author and adventurer Carl Portman on ‘Spiders, at home and abroad’ – we anticipate a highly informative and entertaining exploration of the subject!  Tickets must be bought in advance and are available from September.  It’s £10 per person, to include a glass of wine and tasty tapas.  Doors open from 5.30 for the 6 pm talk.  All proceeds to The Friends.
