Bereavement Advice

While we firmly believe nature to be an extraordinary healer, when it comes to the dreadful pain of losing someone we dearly love, sometimes a little more help can be very valuable. Here is a list of organisation that offer support and advice.

AGE UK is a charity providing valuable advice about all aspects of ageing and end of life issues. This may be a good starting point: When Someone Dies.

The Bereavement Advice Centre helps with practicalities, such as what to do when someone dies, arranging a funeral, and coping with the legal and financial issues that arise, including social security benefits. They can be reached on (freephone) 0800 634 9494

Lasting Post is a web-based voluntary organisation offering comprehensive help with grief and bereavement, from practical guidance about arranging a funeral, through to advice and support for those coping following a loved one’s death.

Cruse Bereavement Care is a national organisation offering free counselling for those suffering the pain of bereavement. They can be reached on 0844 477 9400

The Counselling Directory provides a counselling support network, enabling those in distress to find a counsellor close to them and appropriate for their needs. It is a free, confidential service that will hopefully encourage those in distress to seek help. Every counsellor has submitted their qualifications and insurance cover to the Directory administration, or is registered with a professional body online with recognised codes of ethics and practice, so you can be assured of their professionalism.

Oxfordshire SANDS is a volunteer-led group dedicated to providing help and support for anyone affected by the death of a baby. We are a local branch of Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity), and cover the Oxfordshire region including the area covered by the John Radcliffe (Oxford) and Horton (Banbury) hospitals. We offer a befriender service and also hold informal group meetings once every two months in Bicester. We have a quarterly newsletter and we also host a number of awareness and fundraising events throughout the year. Please visit our website for further information.

The Samaritans provides an extraordinary service. Their volunteers are there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can talk and be heard. National: 08457 909090  | Banbury: 01295 270000 | Stratford upon Avon: 01789 298866
